  • 1971-87: an adherent of Marxism-Leninism-Shibdas Ghosh Thought. During this period, he served as:

    • Assistant Secretary, Ravenshaw College Students' Union 1970-71
    • General Secretary, Ravenshaw College Students' Union 1971-72
    • President, Ravenshaw College Students' Union 1973-74
    • Secretary, Orissa State Committee, All India DSO (Democratic Students' Organisation), a student wing of SUCI (Socialist Unity Centre of India) during the period 1974-82 operating from Cuttack
    • General Secretary, AIDSO (operating from Kolkata during 1982-86)

  • 1987: Resigned from the parent party SUCI in September 1987 on grounds of unresolved theoretical differences as mentioned in the booklet 'Why did I break with SUCI brand of pseudo-Marxism'.

  • 1987-88: Reconsidering the entire corpus of orthodox Marxism. During this brief interlude he brought out several pamphlets on why orthodox Marxism won't do and the need for a critical rereading of the texts of Marx, Engels and other thinkers of their school.

  • 1988-89: Editorship of 'Eastern Weekly' (An English Weekly published from Rourkela and Cuttack)

  • From 1989 upto May 2001: Served as the Founder- Director of 'Project Swarajya' an NGO based at Cuttack, Orissa

  • From 2001onwards: Voluntarily resigned from the post of Director 'Project Swarajya' in May 2001 to make himself free for a larger engagement with civil society.
